Monica was born in Bellshill and raised in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire and has stated that her politics were shaped by her family and community. She initially served as a councillor before being elected as an MSP in 2016 and has served as the party’s Spokesperson for Health and Sport since 2018.

On learning of the endorsement, Monica Lennon said:

"I’m delighted that the Musicians’ Union has endorsed my bid to lead the Scottish Labour Party. The music industry is a major contributor to our culture and economy. I’m passionate about supporting musicians, including those who work in music education.

My call for free music lessons in schools has been backed by Mogwai star Stuart Braithwaite. It’s wrong that children and young people are missing out on voice and instrumental tuition because of their family circumstances. We should have free universal music tuition in state schools and music should be a core part of the curriculum.

“Supporting musicians and nurturing new talent must be at the heart of our Covid recovery plans.”

S&NI Acting Regional Organiser Barry Dallman said:

“The MU congratulates Monica Lennon on winning the endorsement of the Regional Committee. We wholeheartedly agree with her call for free universal music tuition in Scotland’s schools and her commitment to making instrumental music tuition a core element of the curriculum in Scotland.

“We also note her past support for the campaign to protect live music venues during the debate over the Agent of Change amendments to the Scottish Planning Bill and look forward to continuing to work with her, and all our elected representatives, to advocate for the rights of our members and the need for proper support for musicians during these incredibly challenging times.”
