Safety in a Recording Studio

Health and safety advice for recording session musicians.

Last updated: 31 March 2022

Be aware of your surroundings for yourself and your colleagues. Headphone levels, excessive playing loudness in studio – too close a proximity to loud instruments – you must make your session leader or contractor aware.

Trip hazards

There might be many hazards in studios, keep your eyes open. If you play an instrument or use equipment which requires mains power you will need to ensure it is PAT tested and has an official PAT certificate attached.

In case of an accident

Advise your contractor, the producer or relevant person immediately. Depending on where or how you are recording, risk assessments should have been completed and there will be a named person responsible for safety.

If there is a serious concern with risk of injury, the contractor will contact the Musicians’ Union who will seek to investigate.
