As far as is reasonably practicable, employers and engagers must ensure the health, safety, and welfare of their workers. It’s important that all new and existing workers are aware of their organisation’s Domestic Abuse Policy and the support available to them.

The MU Domestic Abuse Policy is a template and a useful starting point for organisations looking to develop their own. It supports all workers, including freelancers, who are experiencing or affected by domestic abuse. The policy sets out how organisations can raise awareness, promote safety and well-being, and provide confidential support, such as flexible working or time off when needed. It defines domestic abuse in all its forms and outlines how managers can recognise signs and respond appropriately. It also takes a zero-tolerance approach to abusive behaviour and includes links to both national and music industry-specific support services.

The accompanying Guidance Notes help employers and engagers put the policy into practice. They offer practical advice on recognising abuse, responding to disclosures, and creating safe, flexible working environments. The guidance explains the different forms of abuse, and emphasises a confidential, non-judgmental approach. It also covers written record-keeping, workplace adjustments, and how to signpost both survivors and those causing harm to appropriate specialist services.
