Become an Inclusive Recruitment Champion

Do you have a passion for equality, diversity and inclusion? Become an Inclusive Recruitment Champion and advocate for inclusive hiring practices in orchestras, ensembles and choirs.

There are two types of volunteer roles available:

Each role involves a free 3-day training programme, taking place in London from 26-28 January. 

Inclusive Recruitment Champion (Workplace Musicians) 

As an Inclusive Recruitment Champion for workplace musicians, you will help advocate for and implement inclusive recruitment practices in line with the 10 Point Plan, helping to build a fairer and more representative orchestral and choral sector across the UK. 

This is your chance to be part of UK-wide change reshaping the future of orchestral and choral hiring. You will also have access to training, resources and a network of fellow Champions, all while developing your leadership and advocacy skills. 

Location: Your own orchestra, choir or ensemble
Commitment: To attend MU-organised 3-day in-person training from 26-28 January in London, with other occasional meetings and reporting
Remuneration: Volunteer role (expenses may be covered dependent on circumstances, see the application form for more information) 

Key responsibilities 

To champion the 10 Point Plan by promoting actions such as: 

  • Regular open calls for Extras and Deputies/Ad-hocs 
  • Screened early-round auditions and anonymised applications 
  • Inclusion of impartial external panellists (non-voting) 
  • Inclusivity training for audition panellists 
  • Transparent trials with clear guidance and feedback 
  • Robust documentation to support the process. 

You will also: 

  • Support your ensemble or workplace in adopting inclusive practices tailored to its structure and resources 
  • Encourage dialogue among musicians and management about equity and fair recruitment 
  • Attend training and peer sessions offered by MU, BLiM, and ABO but with a specific commitment to attend the 3-day in-person training from 26-28 January in London 
  • Share feedback and insights to help refine and improve sector-wide implementation 

Who we're looking for

If you're a musician with lived experience in orchestral, choral or ensemble settings, and a passion for equality, diversity and inclusion in music, this volunteer role may be for you. Applicants must be comfortable initiating conversations and advocating for change. 

No formal recruitment experience is required - just your voice and commitment.

Inclusive Recruitment Champion (Freelance Musicians) 

As an Inclusive Recruitment Champion for freelance musicians, you'll act as a champion from within the freelance community. Your role will aim to promote inclusive and transparent hiring practices in orchestras, choirs and ensembles, guided by the 10 Point Plan and the MU/ABO/BLiM inclusive recruitment guidelines.

This is your chance to help reshape hiring norms across the freelance and orchestral sectors, while building your leadership skills within a national network of changemakers. You'll also have access to resources, mentoring and support from the MU, ABO and BLiM. 

Location: Wherever you work — orchestras, choirs or ensembles 
Commitment: To attend MU-organised 3-day in-person training from 26-28 January in London, with other occasional meetings and reporting 
Remuneration: Volunteer role (expenses may be covered dependent on circumstances) 

Key responsibilities 

To advocate for fairness in hiring processes wherever you work, raising awareness among peers, contractors, and fixers and champion best practices, including: 

  • Public calls for Extras/Deps and ad-hocs 
  • Screened auditions and anonymised applications 
  • Diverse, impartial audition panels 
  • Transparent trials with clear guidance and feedback 

You will also: 

  • Share learnings across orchestras, choirs, and ensembles via your freelance networks 
  • Attend training and peer sessions offered by MU, BLiM, and ABO but with a specific commitment to attend 3-day training 26-28 January in person in London 
  • Contribute to real change by voicing freelance perspectives in wider sector conversations 

Who we're looking for

If you have lived experience as a freelance musician and have a strong commitment to equity and representation in orchestral and choral music, this volunteer role may be for you. Applicants must be willing to have constructive conversations to facilitate change and lead by example. 

No formal recruitment background is required - just your insight and advocacy.

Take part in a 3-day training programme 

Each volunteer role involves a free 3-day training workshop will give you the skills to take your learning back to your workplace and share it with your colleagues. 

You will learn:

  • How to introduce EDI to colleagues and explain how it is relevant in the workplace 
  • How to teach colleagues about unconscious Bias 
  • How to manage difficult conversations in your workplace on inclusive recruitment
