This growth is not just a number, it is the result of tireless work on the ground. From negotiating agreements to supporting colleagues through industrial action, our network of reps and stewards have been instrumental in building trust, solidarity and visibility for the section.
Their work has helped ensure that orchestral musicians, whether freelance or employed, feel supported, heard and empowered to join the Union.
Built by members, for members
The Orchestra Section represents musicians working in everything from chamber ensembles to major symphony, opera and ballet orchestras. With now over 50 collective agreements negotiated annually, the MU continues to secure fair pay and working conditions for its members.
The section’s structure includes six consultative committees, including the BBC Orchestras, Regional Orchestras, Opera and Ballet, Freelance Orchestras and Self Governing. In particular the Freelance Orchestral Committee and a growing network of Roving Stewards, who represent extras and deputies in orchestras without fixed representation have been central to the section’s expansion, ensuring that freelance voices are not only included but actively shaping the Union’s direction.
Reflecting on the milestone, Jo Laverty, MU National Organiser for Orchestras, said:
“This growth is a testament to the incredible work of our members and reps. It’s their commitment to fairness, solidarity and professional standards that has made the Orchestra Section what it is today. Every steward who’s taken on a negotiation, every member who has stood up for their colleagues, this is their achievement. We’re proud to support them and excited to keep building together.”
Looking ahead
With more members than ever, the Orchestra Section is better placed to advocate for the needs of orchestral musicians in a rapidly changing arts landscape. From securing new agreements with organisations like the Buxton International Festival and City of London Sinfonia, to defending jobs at Welsh National Opera (WNO), the MU continues to fight for a sustainable future for orchestral work.
Alex Gascoine Chair of the MU’s Executive Committee and Orchestra Section says:
“As Chair of the MU’s Executive Committee and Orchestra Section, it gives me great pleasure to congratulate the MU’s Orchestra Department on reaching 5000 MU members in the Orchestra Section.
“This is testament to the great work being carried out by Jo Laverty and her team; Morris Stemp, Jennifer Tate and Sam Dunkley and the work of our orchestra stewards. It also shows the strength, influence and respect the MU has in our industry. The Orchestra Department negotiates over 40 collective bargaining agreements and campaigns tirelessly on behalf of all freelance musicians. Together we are stronger.”
