Education Sector

The MU Education Sector is one of the MU's largest industry sectors, offering specialist and proactive representation for musicians who teach.

Last updated: 14 January 2026

The MU Music Education Sector is one of the MU's biggest industry sectors with over 14,000 members.

Music education is vitally important to the MU. Most MU members will teach or have taught in some capacity, and nearly all MU members experienced music education when they were younger. Our members feel passionately that music education should be available to all – regardless of ability to pay or any other barrier to access – and that those who teach music should be appropriately supported, recognised and rewarded for their work.

Any MU member who works in music education – whether in schools, as a private teacher or in any other capacity – is invited to join the Education Sector. Members who are part of the Education Sector receive dedicated news and updates, keeping them abreast of the MU’s work in this area.

Join the Education Sector

The Education Sector is managed by the MU's education team, whose officers work to advance the status and recognition of musicians who teach by providing expert member representation, working to organise members in their workplaces, and answering members’ queries. The team also lobbies the four UK Governments on music education policy and funding, and is responsible for developing the MU's guidance, benefits and resources for teachers.

Education Advisory Board

The MU's Education Advisory Board helps shape the MU's aims and initiatives in music education. Board members come together three times per year to share and discuss their professional experiences so that the MU can focus on the issues that matter. Any MU member who is part of the Education Sector is eligible to stand for the MU's Education Advisory Board.

Applications to join the MU’s Education Advisory Board are invited every two years. Applicants require a nomination from another MU member. A ballot is held if we receive more applications than places.

Please note that the MU Education Advisory Board was previously known as the MU Education Section Committee.
