The MU was proud to return to Tolpuddle this July, joining thousands in the Dorset village for one of the most significant events in the trade union calendar. Across the weekend, we engaged with members and festivalgoers alike — sharing resources, starting conversations, and strengthening ties with the wider movement.
Across the weekend we operated a dedicated marquee, which served as a welcoming hub, offering visitors the chance to connect with staff, pick up merchandise, and learn more about our current campaigns and resources.
Panels discussions and workshop
On Saturday 19 July, MU Regional Organiser Andy Warnock (pictured below, end right) contributed to two thought-provoking panel discussions.
The first, “Can Sectoral and Fair Pay Agreements Work?”, explored the challenges around pay and collective bargaining in the creative industries. In the second, “Can AI Really Outsmart and Outwork Humans?, Andy joined a lively debate on the future of work, creativity, and the growing need for transparency and fair remuneration in response to advancing technologies.
We also hosted a practical workshop for freelancers, focused on organising within their workplaces and communities. This session offered a valuable space for sharing strategies, ideas, and experiences from across the sector.

A powerful display of trade union solidarity
Sunday saw the unveiling of our brand-new banner, proudly carried during the iconic Tolpuddle procession. Marching alongside our sister unions, we took part in a vibrant and united demonstration of solidarity and collective strength.
Our annual presence at Tolpuddle each year reflects the MU’s ongoing commitment to the wider movement for workers’ rights. It’s an invaluable opportunity to connect with fellow unions, raise awareness of our work, and celebrate the vital role musicians play in the cultural and economic life of the UK.
A special highlight of the weekend was seeing MU members — including the brilliant Maddie Morris (pictured below) — perform or join us for the procession.
We’ll be back at Tolpuddle in 2026 and hope to see even more members there. If you’re interested in getting involved, please contact Sinead McCarney at sinead.mccarney@themu.org.
