Speaking outside Number 10 Downing Street on Monday morning, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation.

The Musicians’ Union would like to thank Keir Starmer for his commitment to working people, with legislation passed in the last two years including the Employment Rights ActRenters Rights Actscrapping the two-child benefit cap, and increasing the minimum wage.

On the eve of the tenth anniversary of the Brexit referendum, the MU would also like to thank the Prime Minister for his commitment to tackle issues around musicians touring in the European Union (EU). With the next UK-EU Summit beginning on 22 July, we know that he will continue to make the case for musicians and crew working in the EU and the value of cultural exchange in the interim.

In an emotional speech, the Prime Minister said: “The hard work of change was with a singular purpose, not power for power’s sake, but to change Britain for the better, to build a fairer country with dignity and respect, where everyone is seen, everyone is valued, wealth and opportunity for all, not just the privileged few.”

What happens if there is a leadership election

Nominations for Labour leadership are expected to open on Thursday 9 July, and Labour’s National Executive Committee is expected to set out a timetable in the next few days.

If there is a Labour leadership contest, the MU’s Executive Committee will consider an endorsement process, and the Union will update members as soon as possible.

Some MU members may be eligible to vote as part of the Union’s affiliation to the Labour Party, and those who are will be contacted at the relevant time.
