Following Northern Ballet's decision to move away from using its in-house orchestra for the majority of its performances, relying on a recording, or booking freelancers for smaller strength performances, the Union has been liaising with the management to try to reach a new agreement.

In the latest correspondence however, the management have made it clear that they will operate without a Union agreement, continuing to book freelance players on non-MU terms.

Concerns over confidentiality clause

MU Officials negotiating with Northern Ballet have underlined that a 'core players' or 'first call' list of musicians is essential if a compromise deal is to be reached.

The Northern Ballet orchestra members have been with the company for many years, in some cases decades, and auditioned and trialled for their seats. That some of them have been dispensed with, and not booked for recent live Northern Ballet shows, is unfathomable.

While the Union understands that the company is making attempts to stabilise its finances, operating without an MU agreement and moving to a freelance model seems to be motivated not solely by a hole in their budget.

One of the most shocking aspects of the new contract is that it contains a gagging clause, requiring freelance musicians to keep quiet about the company on social media and in the press. This seems a direct reaction to the Union's campaigning work to save the Northern Ballet orchestra and the members' activism.

Northern Ballet orchestra musicians, along with the Union, have run a respectful and productive campaign for over 18 months, aimed at addressing the company's funding situation, safeguarding live music and their jobs.

The MU remains ready to negotiate

We understand that Northern Ballet is currently making recorded backing tracks with UK musicians to accompany some of its performances on tour. Members approached for the work are advised to contact the Union for advice before signing any paperwork.

The MU remains ready to negotiate an improved deal with Northern Ballet, but with a first call list of musicians.

Legal advice is being sought on a range of issues for affected members.
