The MU’s Recording and Broadcasting team has announced a record royalty distribution of just over £2 million for 2025 – the highest in its history.

This milestone surpasses the previous record of £1.57 million set in 2023, marking a significant achievement for the organisation and our members.

A record payout in a challenging climate

The news comes at a time when the music industry faces mounting challenges, including low pay, the growing impact of artificial intelligence, and reduced funding for the arts. Against this backdrop, the record distribution offers a welcome boost for working musicians.

MU royalties are generated from a wide range of sources, through the ‘sync’ of UK commercial recordings. This includes music licensed for use in television programmes, advertising campaigns, films, and video games. The breadth of these income streams highlights the importance of protecting and maximising musicians’ rights in an evolving industry.

The Recording and Broadcasting Team continues to lead vital efforts to ensure performers are fairly compensated and that the fight for better pay remains at the forefront of the Union’s work, safeguarding the livelihoods of musicians across the UK.
