For over 25 years I have benefitted from being an MU member, from the basic stuff such as PLI and other insurance, to guidance on rates and on occasion help with recovering fees.

The MU has also helped to set up the Association of Independent Music Services (AIMS), a vital source of help and support for those of us working in this growing sector. AIMS provides mutual support for music teacher cooperatives and other independent self-governing music services.

For all musicians, the period of COVID lockdowns was very difficult and during this time I really appreciated the constant help, support, communication and advice which the MU provided.

They really helped me to feel part of a wider musical community and afterwards, I felt that I wanted to give something back to help other musicians and to help shape the direction of the union.

Getting involved

I have been a Regional Committee (RC) member for Wales and South West England for three years and enjoy the quarterly meetings, especially when these are in person.

The committee is made up of musicians from a wide range of backgrounds and there is always a new and interesting perspective to be gained on all aspects of the profession.

It is also good to get updates on regional issues from Regional Organiser Andy and Regional Officer Ruth, and also from the Executive Committee (EC) representative so we can see things from a UK perspective.

Help shape the profession for years to come

Attending the Delegate Conference in Birmingham last year was really interesting and the whole experience was very inclusive. It was fantastic to connect with musicians from all over the country and we put forward three motions on issues which we felt needed particular attention.

The motions included musicians working in amateur theatre, a Welsh language provision and more, and I am looking forward to following their progression in the coming months.

I would strongly encourage all musicians to join the MU so their voice can be heard, and encourage all existing MU members to be engaged in the Union - either by contacting one of the officials or RC members about issues, or getting directly involved on one of the committees.

It is our Union, so be an active part of it and help shape the profession for years to come.
