About Simon Toner
Simon Toner is a Glasgow-based composer, musician and teacher who composes music for film, theatre, art and radio. Simon is a founding member of Sekoya who recorded their debut album in Memphis at Court Square Recordings in November. His composition practice spans from electronic to orchestral textures with commissions for the BBC, Edinburgh International Book Festival & Sky Arts. His band Sekoya gives voice to him as a composer and double bassist in the interplay of jazz. He is part of a collaborative network of Scottish and London musicians and creatives and has toured Europe as a bassist. Simon's career highlights so far would be the BBC broadcast of Niamh McKeown’s ‘Good Girls’ after it was screened at international film festivals, performing with Tenement Jazz Band (Best Band Scottish Jazz Awards 2022) across Europe and collaborating with Ivor Novello winning composer Oliver Vibrans on his Sky Arts orchestral score recorded at Abbey Road Studios. His proudest moment to date was finishing recording Sekoya's album in Memphis.
Commissions include The Process, a play performed at The Bunker Theatre London, Farmland, a dark comedy short film about sisters by long term collaborator Niamh McKeown, Rosalyn, a psychological short film drama on pregnancy by Olivia Middleton, Good Girls, a rambunctious comedy short about school girls by McKeown, Fat Lot of Good, a podcast by and for fat people by comedian Helen Thorn, Change of Tune, a short film about jazz daydreams by Froydis Fossli Moe, Universal Credit, an investigative podcast by journalist Ailean Beaton and Hidden Door Festival, a short documentary produced by High Tide Media for Creative Scotland. Simon has worked as a copyist and orchestrator for composers Belinda O’Hooley and Heidi Tidow on the songbook for their score for the HBO TV programme Gentleman Jack and for composer Simon Heath. Simon is a graduate with a BA (hons) in Popular Music and has diplomas from NFTS and ABRSM. Simon is also an enthusiastic music educator.
