About Rebecca Young
I am a singer-songwriter and rapper based in the Scottish Highlands. I first started writing my own music when I was at high school; I was going through a particularly bad time in my life and music has helped me get through it. My songs, which are on my Youtube channel and Soundcloud page, are about the problems young and mentally ill people face each day and have positive messages to help them not give up on their lives or themselves. The topics of my songs include bullying, loving ourselves, questioning society, self-harm and activism.
I first became interested in music by listening to my parents' CDs, including Lisa Loeb, KT Tunstall and Queen, when I was little. I was home-schooled until I was 14, then I went to Dunblane High. I really enjoyed the music classes and the other artists I discovered, including Black Veil Brides, Falling In Reverse and Twenty One Pilots. I also went to singing and keyboard lessons outside of school, and I performed covers and some of my own songs with the Stirling Music Centre; I also enjoyed volunteering with the music workshops at school that were organised by the Tolbooth in Stirling.
I am now a BA(Hons) Applied Music graduate (Upper Second Class) looking for work in community music, live performance, composition or content creation. I also hope to study either a PGDE Secondary or post-graduate Music Therapy course next year.
