About Mian Shahmir Samee

Shahmir Samee is a flautist and media composer in his final year of study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, studying flute and piccolo with Ian Clarke, Sarah Newbold, Philippa Davies, and Christopher Green. He studied composition for media with David Gale, and is currently applying for postgraduate courses in Sound Design to further pursue his love of composition for games, film, and television. He has recently performed as part of the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Jessica Cottis and Roberto Gonzalez-Monjas (including performances using Guildhall’s pioneering low-latency audio system), Guildhall Studio Orchestra, and the Bartram Symphony Orchestra in 2018. He has also performed in numerous operas staged by the Guildhall School, including its production of Haydn’s La Fedeltà Premiata in 2019. Prior to beginning his studies at Guildhall, he was Principal Flute of the Arabian Youth Orchestra in 2016 and 2017. His accolades include being a two-time finalist in the Young Musician of the Gulf competition in 2016 and 2017, where he won Best Overall Woodwind Performer in 2016 and Young Composer of the Gulf in 2017.

As a composer and performer, Shahmir is passionate about combining influences and media from a wide range of musical traditions, manifesting in a collaboration with composer Will Davenport in 2018 on his debut album I Can’t Get Out of Bed, an ongoing collaboration with internationally acclaimed Rabab player Homayoun Sakhi, a love of extended techniques in performance, and a fascination with the nexus between electronic and acoustic media in composition.

When away from his musical endeavors, Shahmir enjoys games in many forms, particularly Magic: The Gathering and Warhammer 40,000.
