About Amanda Johnson
I am a violinist and composer based in Sheffield on the edge of the Peak District National Park, with an MA in performance. I compose, perform and record music exploring the themes of migration, travel and identity through the lens of my own ancestry. My work combines acoustic instruments and voices with audio recordings and synthesised sounds.
I have recently worked with The National Trust, Company Chameleon Dance and the charity Sound and Music. My music has been performed at venues across the UK including the Glasgow Centre for Contemporary Art, Wentworth Woodhouse, Sheffield Arena and the National Media Museum. It has featured in radio broadcasts in the UK, USA and Switzerland and has been acquired by three public collections.
I have performed at some prestigous venues across Yorkshire, Derbyshire and beyond, including Chatsworth, Hassop Hall, Sheffield City Hall, Buxton Museum and York Minster.
In 2017 I was awarded the Francis Chagrin award from Sound and Music and in 2019 a scholarship from the Finzi Trust. In 2022 Britten Pears Arts supported me to work on my new opera, and last year I was artist in residence at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music.
