About Al Hodgson
Based in Weybridge, Surrey, UK, AL Hodgson is a professional musician, composer, and music educator with over three decades of experience in performance, composition, teaching, and music technology.
AL’s musical journey began as a Cathedral chorister, followed by a scholarship to study music at secondary school, and then five years of university-level music education. Since 1991, he has worked as a freelance musician and musical director, performing on television, radio, cruise ships, chart albums, national theatre tours, and at private and corporate events.
As a composer, AL has built an extensive catalogue of music for choirs and educators. His work is widely used in schools and performance settings, and a curated collection of his original KS3 teaching resources will be available at www.lexana.co.uk from the summer of 2026.
AL has also made a significant contribution to music education. Since 1998, he has served as Director of Music at four UK schools (primary and secondary), revitalising three underperforming music departments and championing music education at the senior leadership level. He has written a complete, bespoke KS3 music curriculum designed to engage and inspire students.
In September 2025, after more than 20 years leading music departments, AL decided it was time to let someone else have a go and he has embarked on a new chapter in his career and is currently a class music teacher at a leading independent school in Weybridge.
