New MU Survey Explores Free Childcare for Working Musicians

The MU is surveying members who are parents or carers of children under 18 to understand how current free childcare provision works for musicians and explore alternative models better suited to their working patterns.

At MU Delegate Conference 2025, Motion 21 was carried, calling for the MU to address barriers to accessing free childcare due to musicians’ working patterns.

This survey will directly feed into our approach to this work. Your responses will help us better understand how musicians with parenting and caring responsibilities navigate current free childcare provision funded by government, and explore alternative models that may be better suited to working musicians.

Who is this survey for?

The survey is for musicians who are parents and carers of children aged under 18.

The survey will remain open until Friday 6 November 2026 at midnight and should take around seven minutes to complete.

How will the survey data be managed and used?

We have worked with Parents and Carers in the Performing Arts (PiPA) on the survey design, and will collaborate with them on the outcomes.

Both the MU and PiPA will have access to the data, but the survey will be administered and managed by the MU. The survey is completely anonymous, so the survey will not collect any identifiable information unless it is provided by you in open-text answers.

Once the survey is closed, the MU will remove any identifiable information from open-text responses before sharing the data with PiPA.

By completing the survey and submitting your responses you provide us with consent to use your responses as described above.
