Previously, applications for the parental grant had to be submitted within six months of a child's birth or adoption. Following a recent motion considered by the Executive Committee, the eligibility window has now been extended to 12 months.
The change recognises that many members may be unaware of the grant, or may be unable to prioritise an application during the first few months of parenthood due to caring responsibilities, adoption processes or other personal circumstances.
The parental grant* provides eligible MU members with a grant of £275 following the birth or adoption of a child. Grants are also available to members who experience pregnancy or baby loss. By extending the application period, the MU aims to improve awareness, accessibility and take-up of the scheme.
Members can find full details of the parental grant, including eligibility criteria and how to apply, as well as information on other support available through the Union, on the MU website below.
