Musicians' Union expresses concern at proposed Wrexham Music Service budget cuts

Withdrawing funding completely without considering how best to create a music service that is sustainable in the long term is a major threat to music provision for young people in Wrexham as well as teachers’ jobs.

Andy Warnock, MU Regional Officer for Wales and South West England, said “We recognise that local authorities have difficult decisions to make as a result of their provisional settlements from the Welsh and UK Governments, but this vague proposal would be a dramatic change, and Wrexham Council do not appear to have considered any alternative approaches or models for the Music Service.

We will be engaging with Wrexham Council, Wrexham Music Service, and the teachers involved in order to try and find a positive way forward for music education in Wrexham. Any teachers employed by Wrexham Music Service, or affected by similar issues at other music services, should get in touch so that we can provide appropriate advice and support at the earliest possible opportunity.”

If you work for Wrexham Music Service or are affected by similar issues elsewhere please get in touch with Andy via cardiff@themu.org or 02920 456 585.
