MU Redesigns Organists and Ceremonies Rates

Sector expertise, including contributions from the Royal College of Organists (RCO) and MU/RCO joint members, helped shape the new rates, which introduce new categories, updated guidance and a 3% uplift for 2026 to better reflect organists' working practices and responsibilities.

Alongside a 3% uplift, the Organists and Ceremonies Rates have also been comprehensively reviewed and redesigned, addressing long-standing issues raised by members and creating a clearer, more practical framework for both organists and engagers.

The revised rates better reflect differing levels of responsibility, provide greater clarity in areas where members have identified uncertainty, and recognise work that was not previously reflected within the rates structure.

Overview of key changes

Key changes include:

  • The introduction of three categories recognising different levels of responsibility: organ playing without choral or vocal accompaniment; organ playing with choral or vocal accompaniment; organ playing with responsibility for directing the choir.
  • New rates for rehearsals held on the day of the engagement and on a separate day.
  • The introduction of an hourly preparation rate to recognise administrative and other duties, including work that has historically fallen outside the rates framework.
  • Guidance on other relevant MU rates, helping members and engagers understand where additional fees and rights may apply.
  • Updated recording and livestreaming guidance.

We hope these updated rates and guidance will better support musicians and engagers by providing greater clarity on fees and ensuring the work involved is more accurately recognised.
