Following the resignation of Angela Rayner, the Labour Party will be holding an election for Deputy Leader of the party.

The MU would like to firstly thank Angela for all of her work, especially her dedication to the Employment Rights Bill that is so important to all trade unions. She will be greatly missed.

As an affiliated trade union, the MU will be able to nominate a candidate to go into the ballot for Deputy Leader.

Once we know who the candidates are, the MU Executive Committee (EC) will meet to make this decision. Please note that this will not affect individual members’ choice of who to vote for.

Voting eligibility criteria

MU members who have been members of the Union for at least six months and who pay into the political fund will also be entitled to an individual vote in the contest, as long as they meet the Labour Party’s eligibility criteria:

  • You must support the aims of the Labour Party
  • You must be a British citizen or have lived in the UK for a year or more
  • You must not be a member of any other political party

For a full list of voting eligibility criteria, visit the Labour Party website.

The election will be run by the Labour Party, so all enquiries about the ballot itself will need to be addressed to them. Contact details can be found on their website

How to vote

The ballot will be run primarily by email, and those without email addresses will be sent postal ballots.

To make sure you receive your ballot, please make sure that the MU holds up to date contact details. You can update your details by logging into My MU.

Ballot papers are likely to be sent out at some point in October, but we will provide more details as we get them.
