Following feedback from members, the MU has published two new practical guides for Musical Directors (MDs) and Assistant Musical Directors (AMDs) working in theatre.
The guides outline key responsibilities, explain how the roles can differ across productions, and highlight important considerations around duties, contracts and pay.
They also provide practical advice for musicians working in these roles, including the importance of agreeing responsibilities and remuneration in writing before starting work.

“We’re really pleased to share this new guidance for MDs and AMDs working in theatre. Shaped by research and conversations with musicians in these roles, it aims to highlight key terms and conditions that can often vary, helping MDs and AMDs feel more confident about what to look out for as we continue developing our work in this area.”
