Earlier this year, a City of London Magistrates Court ruling described busking in Leicester Square as a “statutory nuisance” and compared it to “psychological torture techniques.” The ruling effectively banned busking in the area, silencing musicians and setting a dangerous precedent in London and across the UK.
Buskers are now campaigning for new viable and accessible busking pitches in Westminster to replace the pitch lost in Leicester Square.
Their campaign has been endorsed by Luke Silva – who has over two million followers on YouTube and TikTok, and over a million followers on Instagram.
Sign the petition to support central London buskers
“Keep supporting street performers, keep supporting buskers, because we are being completely shut down in this square,” Silva said after performing a cover of Skyfall by Adele with busker Serena Kaos on the last day of legal busking in Leicester Square.
Silva also called on fans to sign the petition in support of the campaign.
Reacting to the ban, one Luke Silva fan commented: “Please don't cancel Luke and all the other beautiful singers!!! Finally something good in this crazy world, and then that's a problem? Well, at least find another place for them to spread love through music. They've become legends. You don't cancel legends.”
