About the event

Releasing music today means being more than just creative – it means being business-savvy too.

As more artists take charge of their careers by creating, releasing, and managing their own music independently, building an understanding how the music industry works is essential.

In this session, the Musicians’ Union and PRS for Music will guide you through the key steps to releasing and managing your music successfully and unlock the full potential of your creative works.

The Musicians’ Union will break down:

  • How copyright law protects your work
  • The difference between Master Rights and Publishing Rights — and how they relate to PRS, MCPS and PPL
  • How record labels and music publishers make money — and how you can apply the same models independently
  • The performer permissions and artist agreements you need to release music legally

PRS will show you how to:

  • Get started as a PRS member and manage your online account
  • Register your works and ensure your metadata is accurate
  • Report live shows and track royalties
  • Use member tools and resources to support your growth

Whether you’re a songwriter, composer or producer, Make Music Your Business: Get release ready is your essential toolkit for turning creativity into a sustainable and rewarding career.
