About the event

Florian Koempel is a copyright consultant and qualified lawyer specialising in the creative industries. He advises organisations including UK Music, the Music Publishers Association and the British Copyright Council, and teaches international copyright law and music industry contracts at Queen Mary, University of London.

In this session, Florian will introduce insights from his new book Beyond Creativity – What Matters in Music Contracts, which offers a practical roadmap to understanding the deals, rights, and revenue streams that shape today’s music industry.

Moving beyond myths and industry jargon, Florian will explore how contracts really work — from publishing and recording agreements to streaming revenues, copyright, and emerging issues such as AI.

What the session will cover

This is a must-attend session for musicians who want to better understand:

  • How music contracts are structured and negotiated
  • Where money flows in the streaming era
  • Key copyright fundamentals and common pitfalls
  • How to protect your rights and career in a changing industry.

This hybrid event will take the form of a live Q&A, with questions submitted in advance by MU members. In-person places are limited, so please indicate on the booking form how you would like to attend.
