About the event
Please note: This event is split into two separate workshops. The morning session (10:30am to 1:00pm) is for women, and the afternoon session (2:00pm to 4:30pm) is for men. You only need to book and attend the session that is relevant to you.
Unlike martial arts or fitness-based self defence, Streetwise Defence training is built around real-life situations.
This workshop is designed to give you practical strategies that can be used in everyday situations when travelling alone, working late or leaving venues after dark, visiting unfamiliar places or meeting new people.
The workshop is trauma-informed, so you can take part at your own comfort level.
This is an educational session and there is no sparring involved, no experience or fitness level necessary, and no pressure to take part physically if you’d prefer to observe.
The workshop will cover:
- How to spot when a situation might be turning unsafe – and how to avoid it
- Simple ways to use your voice, body language and boundaries to stay safe
- Easy, effective self defence strategies to help you get away safely if you need to
- How to trust your instincts and stay calm under pressure
- How to handle uncomfortable or high-pressure situations more confidently

About the instructor
The session is led by Dene Josham, a security professional with 30 years’ experience, including as a Royal Marines Commando and as a bodyguard to high-profile clients including Brad Pitt, Russell Crowe and Angelina Jolie.
The Streetwise Defence approach is built around our Four Pillars of Self Defence – Awareness, Prevention, Mindset and Physical – created by Dene and co-founder Julie Waite, drawing on Julie’s own experiences and advocacy around women’s safety.
