About Helen Ottaway

I have been working as a composer, pianist and piano teacher for nearly 40 years. I studied music at Goldsmiths College, University of London gaining a BMus in 1979. I was a founder member of composer/performer groups Regular Music and 3 or 4 Composers and have received commissions from Nottinghamshire County Council, BBC 2, The Dean and Chapter of Salisbury Cathedral, Inside Out Dorset, The Andrew Bernardi Group and others.

In 1999, with arts administrator Steve Ehrlicher, I formed Artmusic, specialising in collaborative, participatory and site-specific art work. Artmusic has created interactive installations, concerts, exhibitions, films, recordings and public arts projects working locally in Somerset as well as nationally and internationally.

I am always looking for new opportunities and new ways of working. Starting with an artists residency in Sri Lanka I have recently been developing sketches and miniatures towards a new kind of requiem which will incorporate techniques and styles from my existing practise as well as new collaborative strands involving writers and walking.

I teach the piano in my home town of Frome in Somerset, currently online due to Covid19. My pupils range in age from 7 to 98 and from beginner to grade 8.
