At a recent meeting of the MU’s Music Writers’ Committee, a new chairing team was elected. Matthew Whiteside was elected into the role of Chair, with Sarah Sayeed and Joe Galuszka taking on Vice-Chair roles.
Steering the Union’s work on issues affecting music writers
The Music Writers’ Committee helps to steer the Union’s work around any issues affecting music writers - including those working as songwriters, composers, orchestrators, arrangers, copyists and sound designers - and presents an experienced and eclectic consultative board.
At the latest meeting there were discussions around AI, PRS for Music and the Union’s Arranging, Music Preparation and Orchestration rates.
Having a Committee made up of members from all across the composer and songwriter community, working across different genres and roles, means a wide view can be taken on issues, allowing the Union to develop support resources and advice to benefit as many members as possible.
“We’ve got important work ahead”
Matthew Whiteside, the newly-elected Chair, commented: “I’m really pleased to have been elected Chair of the Musicians’ Union Music Writers’ Committee. After over a decade of being part of this group, it’s a privilege to help lead it.
“We’ve got important work ahead, from pushing for better pay and treatment for composers, songwriters, copyists, arrangers, and music creators of all kinds, to making sure our voices are properly heard across the industry and fighting to maintain our digital rights. I’m looking forward to building on what we’ve already done and making real progress”.
