The Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) has published new guidance for Scotland-based applicants interested in applying to the UK Government’s £45 million Music Growth Package.

The package includes funding opportunities for artists, music creators, businesses and organisations across the UK. However, the activity eligible for support varies depending on where applicants are based.

To help Scotland’s music industry understand and make full use of the available funding, the SMIA has sought clarification directly from Arts Council England and set out what Scotland-based applicants can apply for and the restrictions they need to be aware of.

Funding available to Scotland-based applicants

Several funds within the Music Growth Package are open to eligible applicants based in Scotland:

  • Music Creators Growth Fund: Grants of £10,000 to £20,000 are available to experienced artists, artist collectives, bands, composers, DJs, groups, producers and songwriters working across all genres. Applicants must have a strong professional track record developed over at least three years. Scotland-based creators can apply for eligible international activity taking place outside the UK.
  • Music Growth Fund: Music businesses and organisations can apply for grants of £1,000 to £100,000. Scotland-based applicants can seek support for eligible international activity, as well as certain activity within the UK that benefits artists, audiences or music businesses in England.
  • Music Export Growth Scheme: Independent music companies looking to develop international markets can apply for grants of £5,000 to £50,000.
  • International Showcase Fund: Music creators invited to international industry showcases, conferences or songwriting camps can apply for grants of up to £5,500.

What activity is eligible?

Scotland-based artists, music creators, businesses and organisations can apply for support for eligible international activity outside the UK. Some domestic activity may also be eligible where it benefits artists, audiences or music businesses in England.

Activity focused solely on Scotland has more limited eligibility under the package because responsibility for domestic cultural activity in Scotland is devolved.

Visit the SMIA website for full details on eligible activity and guidance for Scotland-based applicants.

Check the guidance before applying

Eligibility depends on both the applicant and the activity they are seeking support for, so members are encouraged to check the Scotland-specific guidance alongside the guidance for the individual fund before preparing an application.
