About the event

This event has now been opened to all members of the MU.

The MU is delighted to announce a new series of online events this Autumn for our Orchestra Section members. There will be four different interactive workshops covering health, wellbeing, presentation skills and workshop design, providing a perfect opportunity to network with colleagues and meet some of our expert trainers.

This is our first event, which will be run in collaboration with the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM) and focus on mouth health for orchestral players, looking at the dysfunctions that can occur like focal dystonia and oral health advice, and tips on areas including dry mouth, ulcers and sore lips.

The influences of posture on the position of the embouchure – how shoulder, neck and jaw tension have a bearing on our facial muscles. We will look at how can we minimise these to support your instrumental playing and maintain the embouchure in good health.

We will also take a brief look at some of the dysfunctions that can occur (e.g musician’s focal dystonia) and how these can be addressed. We will have a dental hygienist with us to share oral health advice and tips, including dry mouth, traumatic ulcers, dry/cracked and sore lips, Angular Cheilitis, prosthetic (denture) retention and Frictional Keratosis. What are they all, you may ask? We’ll find out on the day.

There will be a practical element to this webinar where you can take part at home, applying the principles that apply to you and your instrument. Therefore, you will need some space to stand.

How to attend

This event is designed for Orchestral players, but open to all members of the MU.
