Please note that ‘free’ members are not eligible to nominate or vote in Union elections or ballots, or to hold any office in the Union. Any reference to the entitlement of a member to stand or nominate or vote in an election or hold office shall be interpreted as excluding free members.
Eligibility for being a member of the EC
For all EC Seats:
- Candidates for the EC shall have been members of the MU for at least three consecutive years from the most recent date of admission prior to the nomination deadline.
- No person who is or who at any time during the preceding five years was employed by the MU shall be eligible for nomination
- Any sitting EC member who completes their current term of office at the end of this year remains eligible for re-election unless otherwise disqualified.
And then additionally according to type of seat:
For Regional EC Seats: any MU member wishing to stand for the Executive Committee must be a member of that region and will require another current member (the nominator) to nominate them. The nominator must also be a member of the same region on their MU record, and have agreed to nominate the candidate and for them to share their data with us.
For Reserved EC Global Majority Seats: any MU member wishing to stand for the Executive Committee must be a member from the Global Majority (people who are Black, Asian, Brown, dual-heritage, indigenous to the global south, and/or have been referred to as "ethnic minorities") on their MU record and will require another current member (the nominator) to nominate them. The nominator must also be a member from the Global Majority on their MU record, and have agreed to nominate the candidate and for them to share their data with us.
For Reserved EC Young Member Seats: any MU member wishing to stand for the Executive Committee must be under 30 years of age (a ‘Young Member’) at the date of close of nominations based on their MU record. A Young Member will require another current member (the nominator) to nominate them. The nominator must also be a Young Member on their MU record and have agreed to nominate the candidate and for them to share their data with us.
A member whose record does not show that they are a member of the relevant underrepresented community or region will not be able to stand (be nominated) or to nominate another member.

Relevant Dates
For the purposes of a member standing for the EC, or a member nominating another member to stand for the EC, the relevant date is the close of nominations. For 2026 this is 09 September 2026 at 12 Midday.
So, for example, a member who turns 30 in October 2026 could still stand as a Young Member as they were under 30 at the close of nominations on 09 September 2026.
