Important Update for Members: MU Sections and Committees Rebrand

From April 2026, MU Sections will be relaunched as ‘Sectors’, and their Committees as ‘Advisory Boards’. Elections will also take place in the new year for members to form the new Advisory Boards for the next two-year term.

From April 2026, our Industrial Sections and their respective Committees (for example, the Education Section and its Education Committee), as well as the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) Committee, will undergo a rebrand.

This change is intended to more clearly reflect the role and remit of these vital advisory bodies and to support our efforts to promote them both internally and across the wider industry.

What are MU Sections and Committees?

Alongside our geographic regions and nations structure, the Union also groups members according to the areas of the music industry in which they work. This allows us to communicate more effectively with relevant members about industry-specific issues and to provide services tailored to their needs.

These groups are currently known as Industry Sections, each with its own Section Committee. The MU’s Sections are:

  • Recording and Broadcasting Section
  • Live Performance Section
  • Orchestra Section
  • Theatre Section
  • Music Writers’ Section
  • Education Section

What are MU Sections and Committees being rebranded to?

From April 2026, MU Sections and Section Committees will undergo a rebrand:

  • Sections will collectively become Music Industry Sectors, and individually Sectors (e.g. the Education Sector).
  • Committees will collectively become Music Industry Advisory Boards, and individually Advisory Boards (e.g. the Education Advisory Board).

The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Networks will remain unchanged; however, the ED&I Committee will become the ED&I Advisory Board.

The operation of these bodies and the eligibility criteria for members wishing to sit on them will stay the same. The names of the Executive Committee and the Regional Committees will also be unchanged.

Elections

Each Section Committee and the ED&I Committee operate with the same membership group for two-year terms. The current term ends in April 2026, and elections will take place in the new year for members to form the new Advisory Boards for the April 2026–April 2028 term.

Website updates will be made in the coming weeks to ensure that terminology is consistent ahead of the election process. However, Committees will officially relaunch as Advisory Boards on 1 April 2026, when the new term begins.

If you are interested in joining one of the new Advisory Boards, please look out for further information on the election process, which will be released in the new year.
