The MU will once again be attending the annual Labour Party Conference, taking place from Sunday 28 September to Wednesday 01 October 2025. As well as speaking to delegates and MPs about key issues like post-Brexit touring and music education, we’ll be putting forward a motion to ensure that music streaming and artificial intelligence don’t make it impossible to earn a living as a musician.
Our motion will address the forthcoming Artificial Intelligence (Regulation) Bill, calling on Parliament to change the law and fix music streaming so that music makers receive a fair share of the revenue.
A historic opportunity for change
Naomi Pohl, MU General Secretary, says:
“As tech giants have become increasingly powerful, musicians’ ability to benefit financially from their own creative work and control its use has been severely impacted.
“The upcoming Artificial Intelligence (AI) Bill is a historic opportunity to change copyright law and ensure musicians get a fair deal from both AI generated music and music streaming.
“Despite intense Government pressure, the major record labels have refused to pay a greater share of streaming revenue to musicians. Session musicians receive no streaming royalties at all, and many featured artists receive very little. Copyright reform is now required to ensure that musicians are fairly paid in relation to AI and music streaming.
“We’re calling on the Government to bring forward an AI Bill in the next King’s Speech that provides appropriate and proportionate remuneration for musicians from both AI-generated music and music streaming.”
Together we can get a better deal for musicians and music creators
