UK Music has launched a survey to reveal the economic impact of Black music on the UK music industry.
Initiated by the UK Music Diversity Taskforce, and taken forward by UK Music in collaboration with research partner Counterculture, the survey aims to capture the unique perspectives of artists, creators and behind-the-scenes professionals working in Black British music.
By telling the story of Black music creators and professionals from an economic perspective, the survey’s results will provide a basis for ongoing investment and greater support for the music and the people delivering it.
Champion the Black music community: Take the survey
While the survey primarily aims to understand the experiences of Black people, anyone who works with Black British music is invited to participate, regardless of ethnicity.
The survey is open until Friday January 17 2025, and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
For information on how your data will be used, read the survey's privacy notice.
Understanding the powerful financial impact of Black music on the UK economy
Black British music has reshaped the landscape of the music industry, both nationally and globally, yet there has not been a report attempting to look at its full economic value alongside its cultural contribution.
This first-of-a-kind report seeks to amplify the voices of those who create, promote, and support Black music.
By understanding what drives the industry financially and how Black music influences revenue, brand partnerships, and growth, the survey’s insights will be instrumental in showcasing the powerful financial impact of Black British music on the economy.
Inspiring future collaboration
A key objective of this survey is to be a catalyst for ongoing analysis, stronger industry collaboration, and greater financial and cultural wealth.
The results will act as a blueprint to allow the UK music industry to explore similar topics related to ethnicity and economics in the future, as well as an example of how other countries can discover and understand the impact of Black music in their regions.
Working alongside numerous partners, the report intends to be a reference on how meaningful collaboration can give voice to the value of minority groups and those representing protected characteristics across the board in the UK music industry.
