About The Gentle Good

Known for his enchanting melodies, intricate guitar style and beautiful acoustic arrangements, The Gentle Good is the moniker of Welsh musician and composer Gareth Bonello. Gareth is a captivating interpreter of traditional Welsh music and one of the foremost songwriters writing in the Welsh tongue today.

An accomplished soloist, The Gentle Good has performed all over the world, from the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington DC to the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing. His music is highly acclaimed and has been awarded both the Welsh Music prize and the Welsh Language Album of the Year Award, two of the nation’s most prestigious contemporary musical honours.

Gareth is a highly regarded musical collaborator and has worked extensively with composer Seb Goldfinch and the Mavron Quartet, recording three albums together. In recent years his work has had an international focus, with successful collaborations with artsits in China and India. In 2020 he was awarded a PhD in Music and Performance from the University of South Wales following his research into creativity and intercultural exchange with artists from the indigenous Khasi community of North East India.

Along with a number of artists from the Khasi community, Gareth is a founder member of the musical group Khasi-Cymru Collective. Their debut album Sai-thaiñ ki Sur (the Weaving of Voices) received widespread critical acclaim and was listed in The Guardian’s top 3 folk albums of 2021.

This year will see the release of Galargan (Lament), The Gentle Good’s first solo album for almost seven years. Performed on acoustic guitar, cello and vocal, Galargan is a stripped-back exploration of traditional Welsh melody and poetry that took form during the long isolation of the pandemic.
