About Jane Lane
Hi, I'm a published songwriter and pianist working from my studio. I also teach. I have a classical background, and do refer to it, but I've always preferred pop as a medium as it gives more scope for innovation.
I write through developing a song in my head and conveying it onto a DAW line by line.
My songs sometimes have a rather rocky evolution But no essential part of my music is actually generated by technology. I often struggle to be sure of my influences.
I can write to genre easily but my latest work tends to be genre unspecific, which has been a great experience.
World events tend to fuel my tracks, and I'm always on the lookout for female musicians in particular who may have an insight into my musical intentions,
It may not help with the picture, but I enjoy soul, discord, psychedelic pop, punk, reggae and dubstep, particularly music with rhythm, and am very physically engaged with music. My current work is still unpublished after 2 years in the studio because I'm still evolving the format and structure in the light of recent developments in the music industry.Let's just leave that where it is! Hoping to release in the next six months!
I've previously written and released music for a variety of other artists and three of my own bands, these being:
1. Fluance, a prog rock band, releasing an album called "Lunacy" in 2019, with a second album about to be released entitled "Narratives". Fluance features the music written by Duncan Mackay, Philip Lane and myself, with virtuoso performances by Duncan and Mauritz Lotz.
2. Hookstick , a pop funk band, releasing an album called "Refugee" in 2017.
3. Henry's Machine, 2013- 2015, consisting of 7 electro singles.
I'm currently focused on how the royalties system can reflect radio play accurately...and lead to more naturally evolving and independent career development for new artists.
Teaching is my most conventional area, and I do teach classical skills alongside aural enhancement, accompaniment skills, songwriting, and offer Trinity and ABRSM exams. As I went down the classical route myself before coming out the other side, it only seems natural.
Most of my students are primary age, and so I'm privileged to be able to work with them to develop their musical confidence and competence, and allow them to make early strides in music creativity as well as enabling them to play well.
Music is such an essential part of my day to day and I love crossover projects. So I'm currently releasing a track I recorded with my piano students vocally which I hope will enable them to see a bigger picture of "how music works".
Happy to hear about and be involved in other projects, or get engaged in writing and teaching issues, and solutions of course.
Favourite activity : jamming and collective music evolution.
Least favourite activity : repetition (don't tell my students!)
