The Musicians’ Union is extremely disappointed and concerned to learn of Cardiff University's recently announced proposals to close the School of Music, especially following the closure of the Young Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) programme last year.

We will be supporting members and sister unions in relation to these proposals and the relevant consultations, and any members who may be affected should get in touch as soon as possible.

The University must explore all alternatives to its current proposals, and we hope that an alternative to closing the School of Music can be found.

The proposals reflect broader problems in music education across Wales

The MU believes that Wales should have a thriving music ecosystem, and higher education is a vital part of that network. Welsh Government needs to consider specific support for music in relation to higher education, as the current proposals and recent cuts at RWCMD demonstrate.

These proposals also reflect broader problems in music education across Wales, and it's vital there is increased funding for the National Music Service Wales across the next three years.

We are continuing to engage with Welsh Government and the Senedd in relation to music education and other issues across music, culture, and the creative industries on behalf of members.
