Having been so heavily involved in forming Labour policy and the manifesto, we look forward to working with the new Government to implement meaningful change for the country and for musicians.

The election result last week was a resounding defeat for the Conservative Government and a great result for the Labour Party.

MU General Secretary Naomi Pohl has already been in touch with Keir Starmer and the new Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy, and meetings are being arranged at their earliest convenience.

Whilst we were very sad to see good MU friends like Thangam Debbonaire, Tom Gray and Dave Rowbtree lose out, there are many allies new and old who have been elected amongst the Labour MP ranks who will be helping us to push through our members’ priorities.

Notable ministerial appointments amongst those we know include Chris Bryant at DCMS and Stephen Doughty in the Foreign Office.

Ensuring MU issues are instantly on the radar

The General Secretary and the Head of Communications and Government Relations attended an event in Parliament this week, where they were able to network with newly elected Labour MPs and ensure that MU issues are instantly on their radars.

The event was also addressed by Angela Rayner, who reiterated her determination to implement the New Deal for Working People as a priority.

We would particularly like to thank Thangam Debbonaire for all of her support over the years, and especially as Shadow Secretary of State for Culture.

As a reminder, the Labour Manifesto includes commitments to:

  • help break down barriers for artists touring in the EU
  • implement a broader curriculum, including music education
  • tackle late payments to help small businesses and the self-employed
  • improve workers' rights with a New Deal for Working People.

MU Calls for Westminster City Council to Keep Music Live in Leicester Square

The MU calls on Westminster City Council to appeal a court ruling which classifies busking in Leicester Square as a "statutory nuisance." The judgment unfairly targets those already following the licensing scheme, and threatens both musicians' livelihoods and the future of street entertainment.
