MU members Diljeet Bhachu and Sam Murray represented the MU’s 5000 members age 30 and under at the TUC’s Young Workers’ Conference on 25 – 26 March.

Bhachu moved the MU’s motion on protecting freelance workers, calling on Conference to recognise the impact of freelance workers on the economy, research the impact of low and no pay on young freelance workers, and support trade unions’ fair pay campaigns. She highlighted the MU’s Work Not Play campaign, and asked delegates to consider “As a movement, what can we do to better support and protect these workers?” The motion passed unanimously.

Bhachu and Murray also spoke on topics ranging from affordable housing, freedom of movement within the European Union after Brexit, building creative networks, and digital voting at future Conferences.

Conference chose apprenticeships and pay as priority campaigns for young workers in 2017-18. These will be enacted by the TUC’s Young Workers Forum, which meets four to five times a year to discuss and work on issues affecting young people across trade unions.
