This course is for union members working in the creative sector who have sufficient skills, experience and motivation to coach or mentor others in the industry.

The training is open to fully paid up members of BECTU, Equity, the MU, WGGB and Prospect and non-members from under represented groups e.g. people from BAME backgrounds, disabled people living and working in Wales.

The aim of the programme is to provide the skills and knowledge required to enable established workers in the creative sector who are passionate about learning and development to effectively encourage and support their co-workers through coaching and mentoring practices.

By the end of the programme participants should be able to:

  • explain the differences/similarities between mentoring and coaching
  • assess the role of the coach/mentor and identify the skills and qualities needed to carry out the role effectively
  • define the relationship between the coach and coached and mentor and mentored
  • identify the different styles of coaching/mentoring practices
  • apply coaching/mentoring practice and review progress

Taking part in the training

This course is for union members working in the creative sector who have sufficient skills, experience and motivation to coach or mentor others in the industry (freelance or staff). This could include experienced individuals as well as young members who have links to new entrants (minimum two-years paid industry experience).

People from under-represented groups, e.g. BAME and disabled people are particularly encouraged to participate. They will aim to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that the programme is accessible, please let CULT Cymru know if this something you require.

The programme is free of charge for MU members based in Wales. The full cost of this course is usually approx. £450 per participant therefore only participate if you can complete the course and assessment.

All those who successfully complete the course and assessment will receive one year's free membership to the ILM and access to on-line resources.

Training dates

There will be four Zoom training sessions, which you must be able to attend, running on Mondays 10:30 am – 1:00 pm on 29 June, 6 July, 20 July and 3 August.

There will also be a tutorial on 17 August, attendance is optional for this part.

Following the training all participants will be required to undertake a total of six hours of coaching & mentoring (i.e. sessions lasting 45 minutes. - 1.5 hours with two different people).

There will also be a practical assignment, deadline 2 October, 2020. You will be asked to produce written self-reflections of the six hours of coaching and mentoring you have undertaken in pre-pared forms.

How to apply

If you are interested in either hearing more about the above programme or in attending please briefly consider the following:

1. Why are you interested in the coaching / mentoring role?

2. What benefit could it bring to you as an individual or company, to others in the industry and to your union?

3. What type of person would you like to support (e.g. someone undertaking a similar role to you, someone in the same workplace, a new entrant, anyone in the sector who needs support?)

We can help you find a person to coach or mentor if required, ideally a member of one of the creative unions.
