The MU has been reducing its presence on X since October 2022. Since December, the Union has not posted there at all.

Going forward, the MU will be focusing on other platforms and our X feed will not be monitored. Members with urgent queries will be signposted to the Union's contact form.

The founding principles of the Union

The MU’s rules outline our goals as a collective. These include commitments to equality for all:

  • “To promote the welfare and the interests of its members in all ways”
  • “To promote equality for all including through... collective bargaining, publicity material and campaigning, representation, Union organisation and structures, education and training, organising and recruitment, the provision of all other services and benefits and all other activities” and
  • “To oppose actively all forms of harassment, prejudice and unfair discrimination whether on the grounds of sex, race, ethnic or national origin, religion, colour, class, caring responsibilities, marital status, sexuality, disability, age, or other status or personal characteristic.”

While there is no such thing as an ethical social media platform, developments on the platform since October 2022, combined with Elon Musk’s actions and role in the current US administration, makes the Union’s presence on the platform untenable.

Members who experience prejudice, discrimination or harassment while working as a musician can contact their MU regional office for support.
