Earlier this month, the MU brought together musicians and industry experts for an evening at Belfast’s, Oh Yeah Music Centre, an MU Fair Play Music Venue.

The ‘Show One to Showcase’ panel and mixer gave attendees invaluable industry insights and helped musicians understand what is needed to get showcase and festival-ready, as well as the chance to network with like-minded creatives.

The event also served as the launch of Charlene Hegarty as the MU’s first-ever dedicated Regional Officer for Northern Ireland.

Panel discussion: How to prepare for showcases and festivals

The evening began with a panel discussion, where experts shared advice on how to prepare for showcases and festivals. The panel was moderated by Charlene, and speakers included Mark Gordon from Output Belfast , Ben Magee from New Champion Management , and Liza Geddes from Ireland Music Week.

Discussions included how to ensure you’re ready to perform at festivals, likening the experience to a high-pressure job interview where competition is fierce.

The panel highlighted the importance of rehearsing thoroughly and making sure you’re admin-ready by having all the necessary details at hand, such as setlists and technical specifications. The need to be professional, punctual, and polite when dealing with promoters and venue or stage staff was also emphasised.

The importance of networking and social media

The importance of networking was discussed, and artists were reminded to actively reach out to potential contacts, as opportunities aren’t likely to come to those who don’t take the initiative.

Panellists recommended that if you’re playing or attending a festival, such as Output or the Great Escape for example, then research who will be in attendance, as attendee lists are often publicly available and ask to meet up.

It was noted that building connections with industry professionals, such as managers, panellists, media reps, etc, can be more impactful than relying solely on the showcase itself.

Social media was identified as a great tool for connecting with audiences and building a fanbase, with emphasis on tangible actions like getting online fans to attend a gig or buy your merchandise.

Following the panel, attendees were treated to a very special performance by alt-folk singer & pedal steel guitarist Joel Harkin, followed by an opportunity for attendees to chat and network. It was a really great evening, and it was lovely to host such a great event at a Fair Play Venue.
