Ian Young

Ian embarked on his professional music career in 1980 when enlisting into the Armed Forces as a musician. After studying percussion and drum kit at Kneller Hall, The Royal Military School of Music, he then returned to the RCT Staff Band where he completed many overseas concert tours which included Hong Kong, Egypt, France Germany and Cyprus and in 1989 accompanied H.M. the Queen on her State Tour of Jordan.

On leaving the army in 1994, Ian continued his busy performing teaching career as well as developing his teaching and music management business. He studied with the late Kenny Clare and then went on to acting as dep for Kenny back in the 80's with ‘The Pizza Express All-stars' in London’s West End Jazz Clubs. Other Freelance engagements have included concerts with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and television broadcasts with Lulu, Diana Krall, Marti Pellow and Russell Watson. In 2014, Ian was invited to perform on board the cruise ship Minerva to commemorate the D Day 70th anniversary, with a band consisting of former Royal Marine’s musicians.

Ian holds the post of Head of Percussion and Contemporary Music at St Catherine’s School in Bramley, Surrey and is also the Director of the school’s Concert and Jazz Band. His other musical activities include, directing and running his own Bands, The Ian James Orchestra and The Ian Young All-stars and in 2020, he will be launching another new band formation consisting of ex-musicians from all three services; the Army, Royal Marines and The RAF and will be performing under the name of ‘The Forces Veterans Show band UK’.
