After announcing earlier this month that they would be cancelling all forthcoming events from Sunday 26 March 2023, Oldham Coliseum has proposed that it will now permanently close on 31 March.

The news comes after a complete funding cut from ACE in the latest round.

This represents a huge loss for the theatre sector

Kelly Wood, MU National Organiser for Live, Theatre & Music Writers says: “We’re devastated to hear that the Oldham Coliseum theatre is closing. This represents a huge loss for the theatre sector, performers and audiences.

“Regional theatres are of great importance to their communities, by helping to ensure that everyone can access cultural activities and experience the arts – from a child watching their first panto to a professional musician performing on a musical show. Our thoughts are with all those affected by the closure”.

A statement on the venue's website says:

“Following the news on 4 November 2022 that Oldham Coliseum will no longer be part of Arts Council England's National Portfolio from 1 April 2023, the Board of Trustees and Senior Leadership Team have been working hard to find a solution to this reduction in funding. However, the current financial situation is not sustainable for the running of a full-time theatre.

“It is with great regret therefore that we announce that we have entered into a consultation period with all staff and it is proposed that Oldham Coliseum Theatre will close its doors on Friday 31 March 2023”.

MU Urges Government to Back Musicians on AI

The MU is urging the Government to drop its original AI proposal after the interim consultation response revealed overwhelming opposition. With only 3% of respondents backing the preferred option, ministers must now deliver robust regulation to protect musicians’ rights.
