MU Reaffirms Support for Buskers

Further to discussions on Good Morning Britain last week, which considered whether busking should be banned, the MU confirms that it stands firmly against the notion of licensing buskers, and that they deserve respect and recognition for their work.

Last week, breakfast television programme Good Morning Britain aired an open debate on the question of whether busking should be banned. The discussion arose after a London Council received over 5,000 noise complaints.

Buskers are professional musicians who provide entertainment to their audiences

The MU stands firmly against the notion of licensing buskers. As the trade union for musicians in the UK, we believe in fostering an environment that benefits both artists and the community alike.

MU Live, Theatre and Music Writers Official Nat Witts-Kilshaw said:

"We are committed to representing musicians' voices and will actively engage with the council to ensure their perspectives are heard and considered.

"The iconic Leicester Square is synonymous with world-class street performers, contributing to its vibrant entertainment landscape. Similarly, the West End is renowned for its outstanding artistic and cultural scene.

"As we move forward, we strive to find solutions that support artists while maintaining these celebrated locations' unique charm and appeal."
