A ‘motion’ is a trade union way of asking for something.

At MU Delegate Conference, it’s the method by which members can ask the Executive Committee, the governing body of the MU, to do something on their behalf.

This guide covers:

  • Writing a motion
  • Submitting a motion
  • Formatting a motion
  • Where to send your motion
  • Dos and don'ts

You can also download our suggested submission template below.

If you have any questions, please contact your Regional Organiser (contact details below).

Where to send your motion

Motions to Conference must be submitted via email or traditional post to the Regional Organiser of your region, or the Head of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion, no later than Friday 28 March 2025.

Conference motions to the Equality Diversity & Inclusion (ED&I) Committee

Whilst conference motions to Regional Committees can cover any aspect of Union work, including those with an Equality Diversity & Inclusion (ED&I) theme or aspect, the ED&I Committee is also able to submit one motion to conference directly.

If you want to submit a motion for the ED&I Committee to consider, it must be concerned solely with issues and matters relating to ED&I, and must be supported by at least five members who must provide their names and membership numbers.

One such motion may be accepted or amended by the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Committee and submitted for consideration at the next Delegate Conference 2025.

Prospective motions to Conference via the ED&I Committee must be submitted via email to John Shortell, Head of ED&I, no later than Friday 28 March 2025.
