Growing Pressure on the Government, Platforms and Major Labels to Fix Streaming Now

There have now been over 15,000 signatures on our petition – which we’re running with the Ivors Academy – calling on the Government to help us #FixStreaming and keep music alive.

"It is really encouraging to see so many musicians signing the petition and feeling empowered to speak out against the gross undervaluing of their work."

Building pressure means that not only are the cross-party Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee is calling on Government to investigate streaming – but platforms are beginning to respond to the news too.

Naomi Pohl, MU Deputy General Secretary responsed:

“It is really encouraging to see so many musicians signing the petition and feeling empowered to speak out against the gross undervaluing of their work. We know the pressure is working as the cross-party DCMS Select Committee is on our side, and the Spotify CEO Daniel Ek responded to the growing pressure last week.

“He said that he hasn’t seen a single artist happy with the money they are getting from streaming. That’s not a surprise – he won’t see that until platforms and major labels ensure songwriters, composers and performers are paid fairly for their work.”

Graham Davies, Ivors Academy CEO explained our continued call for action:

“Over 15,000 have now signed the petition for a review of the streaming market. The song is not valued properly, the system is weighted against the average creator, the rich are getting richer while the average creator is asked to work harder.

“We call for Parliament’s assistance in bringing about meaningful dialogue and action in this vital area of the creative economy.”
