CULT Cymru is a learning project led by Bectu in partnership with Equity, the MU and the Writers’ Guild. It works with industry workers, employers and other organisations to arrange learning activities and networking events throughout Wales.

In 2025, it will once again be delivering the popular Coaching and Mentoring for Creatives programme, run in partnership with the Professional Development Centre and endorsed by the Institute of Leadership and Management.

The training is free (less a £50 deposit, which is refundable on participation of the full programme) and open to MU members in Wales. Employers who place staff on the programme are required to cover the costs of the trainer (approximately £360 per person).

Aim and objectives

The aim of the programme is to provide the skills and knowledge required to enable established workers in the creative sector, who are passionate about learning and development, to effectively encourage and support their co-workers through coaching and mentoring practices.

By the end of the programme participants should be able to:

  • explain the differences/similarities between mentoring and coaching
  • assess the role of the coach/mentor and identify the skills and qualities needed to carry out the role effectively
  • define the relationship between the coach and coached and mentor and mentored
  • identify the different styles of coaching/mentoring practices
  • apply coaching/mentoring practice and review progress.

Union reps or activists are particularly encouraged to participate. This could include experienced individuals, as well as young members who have links to new entrants (minimum two years paid industry experience).

Those from under-represented groups (such as Global Majority, LGBTQ+, and disabled members) are also encouraged to participate, as well as Welsh speakers.

Training dates and important information

The training will take place online via Zoom, and participants must attend all sessions, as well as the tutorial on the final day.

  • Monday 27 January, 10:30 am - 1:00 pm
  • Monday 3 February, 10:30 am - 1:00 pm
  • Monday 10 February, 10:30 am - 1:00 pm
  • Monday 17 February, 10:30 am - 1:00 pm
  • Monday 24 February, 10:30 am - 1:00 pm

Following the training, all participants will be required to undertake a total of six hours of coaching and mentoring (in the form of sessions lasting between 45 minutes – one and a half hours, with two different people). CULT Cymru may be able to help you find a person to coach or mentor if required.

The practical assignment deadline (which is written self-reflections of the coaching and mentoring you will have undertaken in pre-prepared forms) is Tuesday 6 May, 9:00 am.

The reflective practice log will be submitted to the PD Centre, and a certificate will be awarded to all those who reach the required standard (you will be offered guidance with your written assignment if required).

If you have any access requirements, or to request more information (including full breakdown of schedule content), please contact sian@bectu.org.uk.

Places are limited and applications will close once filled.
