About Dominique Le Gendre

Born and brought up in Trinidad and Tobago, I played the guitar and cuatro from an early age in my local church and school choirs. With a clutch of A'levels in hand, I then trained as a classical guitarist in Paris, France while pursuing parallel studies in harmony, music analysis and musicology and composing for experimental student films.

Based in London since 1987, I am a former Associate Artist of the Royal Opera House and Manning Camerata. I have composed music for chamber ensembles, soloists, opera, music-theatre, theatre, dance, drama for BBC radio 3 and 4, independent films and television including Waris Hussain’s Sixth Happiness, Mike Hodges’ The Healer and the award winning CD/audio recordings of all 38 Shakespeare plays directed by Clive Brill, The Arkangel Complete Shakespeare.

Other award winning productions include Frances-Ann Solomon’s BBC radio adaptations of Grace Nicholls’ poem I Is a Long-Memoried Woman and Jackie Kay’s Adoption Papers; Karen Martinez-Lambert’s independent film, Dreams in Transit and the critically acclaimed Shakespeare’s Globe production of Richard II directed by Adjoa Andoh and Lynette Linton.

In 2012, with Melanie Abrahams, I co-produced and co-curated the London is the Place for Me festival of Trinidad and Tobago’s culture in celebration of the country’s 50th Anniversary of independence at the Tricycle Theatre.
