The MU was appalled to hear that a number of members were sent a letter by English Touring Opera (ETO) stating that they will not be booked for the 2022 tour. This equates to almost half the orchestra losing their roles.

Our priority at present is with the musicians, and concentrating on providing legal advice and assistance to support the members directly affected.

The MU has also raised a concern about the lack of fair process with Arts Council England and has been informed this is under investigation.

We also strongly believe that this decision is absolutely not about diversity and will set back diversity and inclusion agendas throughout the orchestral sector – which we explain in more detail in our recent blog from MU Head of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion John Shortell.

If you would like to write to ETO in support of the orchestra members and need some guidance please contact orchestral@theMU.org.
